Professor Jennifer Finney Boylan at The Fig House
It's a special sort of feeling when, years out of college, you have the opportunity to hear one of your favorite professors lecture again. Recently I was asked by my alma mater, Colby College, to design and host a brunch during which Professor Jennifer Finney Boylan, who you may recognize from I AM CAIT, from her frequent NYTimes contributions, or from her work as the co-chair on the Board of Directors for GLAAD, was going to come speak to us about her new book, Long Black Veil.
As you can tell from my face in the photograph above, the day was special to me, and hearing Jenny speak was inspiring in ways I hadn't anticipated. I've been reading her new book, and it is incredible. It's both a page-turning thriller and a piece of beautiful literature. (It's been compared by some to The Goldfinch - a comparison that seems pretty apt.) She's coming to LA again next week for a talk at Book Soup about the book. I'll be there, and I hope to see some of you as well. (Details below)
